Aims of the Portsmouth Amateur Diary

The Portsmouth Amateur Diary (PAD) was set up to help amateur theatre groups in the Portsmouth area plan their productions better, avoid clashes of similar shows, and promote one another.

I believe that the amateur theatre groups in the Portsmouth area should help one another, not compete for members and audiences.  Every month I publish a combined list of the forthcoming productions in this area, which is emailed to over 200 individuals, drama groups, media contacts and other organisations. I also keep this website up to date with your show details and your show posters.

There is a wide range of member groups who present a great variety of different types of shows. Click here to see the list of current members.

My aims for PAD are to:

  • Help publicise the productions of our member groups
Publicity can be expensive - it is important to know that it is well targeted. It is very likely that the people who come to one member's shows will be interested in seeing other productions in the same area. The list of members' forthcoming productions published in the programme has proved a very effective means of publicity, targeted at the people who are most likely to take notice.

Copies of the diary are sent by email every month to all member groups and to 250 other recipients, including local libraries (most of which display the diary on their notice boards), Tourist Information Centres, local newpapers, Portsmouth Civic Offices and the Portsmouth City Arts Office, local radio stations and a large number of individuals.

Please note that although we send copies of the diary to local media organisations, this does not mean your show will be included automatically in their events diaries. You will need to contact the organisation yourself to ensure inclusion in their diaries.

  • Prevent clashes of production dates
When planning the dates of your next show, it can be very useful to know whether other shows of a similar nature are being planned in the area at the same time.

If you are an amateur theatre group performing in or around Portsmouth (including Fareham, Petersfield, Chichester, Havant and Hayling Island) and you want to join the Amateur Diary, it's easy.  The subscription is only ?10 per year (January to December), to cover administration and website costs, or ?5 per half-year (July to December). In return, you get:

  • A monthly mailshot, to all member groups, of the listings for the next 6 to 12 months.

  • Details of your group and your productions (including posters) added to the PAD website (updated daily).

  • Listings sent to local media, newspapers, libraries and tourist information centres.

  • Your show details included in the programmes of the productions of other member groups.

In return, all I ask is that you undertake to add the latest listing to the programmes of each of your productions, and keep me up to date with the details of your future shows. The inclusion in your programme can either be as one of the printed pages or a separate inserted A4 or A5 sheet (obtainable from me or you can print your own from the website).
